Piked positions rely on your shoulders pretty decently open, unless you exhibit a great deal of lordosis or lower back flexibility, which will allow you to stack the pelvis overhead without shoulders being fully flexed.
If your shoulders tend to close when you attempt to bring your pelvis overhead, this can be the result of:
  • lack of body awareness. This booty is heavier than your legs after all, so your shoulders aren’t restricted in terms of ROM but not used to holding their grounds when the butt is the counterweight overshot.
  • lack of mobility. You can’t open your shoulder sufficiently yet to accomodate a piked position. If that’s the case, use the strategy below, and reach out to me to design a plan of action.
